About Dr. Crystal Schmidt

When I was an intern just finishing chiropractic school I had a unique experience that I still carry with me today. My father was in a lot of pain and needed to see a chiropractor. He had not had a good experience in the past and was apprehensive about going to one again. I convinced him to see the doctor I was studying under at the time. I knew this chiropractor was a great doctor, but as he worked on my dad I monitored every single move he made. I wanted to make sure this doctor had every important detail. I wanted my dad to have the perfect amount of care- to have everything the doctor offered that would help him, and nothing extra or frivolous. Like a mother hen guarding her chick.

I realized something that day that would shape the way I practice. If I treated everybody with that much thought and caution, guarding them as if they were my own family member: their care would be exceptional.

And that is what I do- with every patient I see I think about the day when I stood there and watched my father being treated by that doctor. And with each patient I ask myself: What would I want this patient to have if they were my father?

I grew up near the Eau Claire, WI area on a small hobby farm in the outskirts of town. I have always loved the outdoors, from climbing trees and collecting toads when I was young, to gardening and taking a relaxing walk through the woods today.  I graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a degree in Biology. Following that I completed Chiropractic school, which is where I really learned to appreciate what natural medicine can do for people.  My degree is in chiropractic, but my true passion is helping sick people become well by using natural methods.

I operate according to the Golden Rule: treat people as you wish to be treated.
When I go to a health care facility I want my doctor to be on time, I want them to pay attention to me- to listen when I talk and ask relevant questions. I want a thorough exam and well thought out treatment and I want it explained to me in a way that I can understand. I want the doctor to be honest with me and to tell me what I need to do to improve. I want the greatest care possible but I don’t want any care that is unnecessary. This is what I expect and this is what I intend to give.

What good is life if you aren’t having fun?!
Your health is a matter that I take very seriously. I love what I do and I like to have fun at work.
Although we are dealing with something that is serious, you will find a very light-hearted atmosphere here.

I look forward to working with you!
-Dr. Crystal Schmidt DC

What makes Natural Medicine Center of Wisconsin Different?

I am successful in diagnosing and treating complex and chronic cases because...

I perform a truly thorough examination: spending 1 to 2 hours with you. This is extremely important. Once you are a patient, a typical visit may last 20 to 40 minutes, depending on your needs.

I look at functional blood chemistry analysis, which allows me to have a better understanding of what is taking place internally and allows for a much stronger diagnosis and treatment. Please also know that each lab test that is performed will be explained to you in detail.

I believe in and practice sound nutritional protocols. Any nutritional products recommended are high quality professional products that are developed based on current research on how they affect human physiology. They are dosed at a therapeutic range to increase function in the body.

I use Chiropractic techniques that are long lasting and get you feeling better and back to doing the things you love. I can use both gentle and more intense adjustments and therapies depending on your preference. Understanding the process of injury as well as the healing mechanisms of the body is important.

In order to provide relief that lasts and prevent your problems from returning you must eliminate the problem and help the body and brain to establish new and proper memories. I know this sounds a little odd, so I will give you an example: say you have injured your shoulder- it is painful to lift and feels stiff. If left too long this way, your brain will start to interpret this new pattern as normal. It is now three weeks since you have injured it and it is has not healed like you expected, so you decide to seek care. Your chiropractor adjusts your neck and shoulder and it feels great for the rest of the day.

You wake up the next morning to find your shoulder is stiff and sore again. What happened?

Well, in order to minimize your discomfort, your brain was operating your injured shoulder differently and adopted it as your new normal. When your chiropractor adjusted your shoulder, your brain didn't like it and slowly let it fall back out of place to its new dysfunctional but "normal" position.

Your shoulder will respond best when after being adjusting into place, the muscles around it are balanced, and your brain is taught that this is the way it is supposed to be. If these three steps are taken, the shoulder will heal. How long this process takes depends on several different factors, and we can get a good idea of them during your health history.

This example can apply to any body part- neck, low back, knees, ankles, etc. I often find people with more complex structural issues like pinched nerves, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, frozen shoulder, tight muscles, migraine headaches, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, hip pain and problems due to old injuries will not respond unless addressed in the manner I described above. People suffering with these types of problems often are given medication, inadequate treatments, or unnecessary surgery that does not work in the end. They are left suffering and told that they will just have to live with it. This is sad and untrue.

Personal attention plus a very thorough diagnosis will lead to the most effective customized treatment plan and the best outcomes for you, the patient.

What to Expect for Natural Medicine Consultation and Treatment

Initial Consultation
Dr. Schmidt will speak to you over the phone in order to get a general idea of your health concerns and will then determine if you are a good candidate for care. If you are not a good candidate, you will be referred to another doctor who can help you.

Consultation & Exam
When you arrive on the day of your first appointment, you will spend at least an hour with Dr. Schmidt (just be on the safe side, you should plan on being here 1-2 hours). She will go over all of your paperwork and perform a thorough exam. Most people will also receive treatment at this appointment- this may include very specific adjustments and therapies to affect your nervous system and organs in order in impact your specific symptoms.

Some patients will need to have laboratory testing. Some studies are performed at home, and in that case we will give you the supplies to do this. Most often we order blood tests that will be drawn at a nearby medical clinic.

In order to get a jump on your case and improve your health, Dr. Schmidt may recommend you start on certain nutrients right away, and you will be given them the day of your first appointment. In other cases she may wait to prescribe anything until any lab test results are in.

Interpretation & Diagnosis
After your consultation and exam, Dr. Schmidt will sit down and go over every detail of your case again as well as any blood work, x-rays, or scans you brought in.

Dr. Schmidt will create a report of your case including a summary of the significant findings in your case as well as how they relate to your symptoms. The report will also include your plan for treatment- how often you need to be seen and if you need to take any nutrients.

Since your treatment and expected results are based on known biological mechanisms, she will also let you know when to expect your symptoms to improve, how we will measure that you are in fact making improvement, and what we will do if you do not respond as expected.

Report & Treatment
At your second visit you will be presented with your report as described above. Dr. Schmidt will go over all your results, as well as your plan for treatment. She will answer any and all questions that you may have. You may receive nutritional supplements based on the results of your specific lab tests.
